Location Detection & Use

When you connect your Magic Leap device to a Wi-Fi network, Magic Leap systems will attempt to derive your precise location information (latitude and longitude coordinates) from information collected about your device and nearby Wi-Fi routers, including MAC addresses, detected from the Wi-Fi networks around you, using Google’s Geolocation API service. Magic Leap may also collect your approximate location information (including your continent, country, city, and postal code) using your IP address. Your device’s location can only be detected when the device is connected to the internet. Magic Leap enables apps to query your Magic Leap device for location information with your permission. However, we prohibit third-party apps from using location information for any purpose other than to enable application functionality, including for digital rights management.

Magic Leap processes location information as described in its Privacy Policy. Such uses include:

  • Detecting your time zone and date

  • Enabling use of location-based features, such as locating your device

  • Making recommendations about apps popular in your area or otherwise personalizing your experience when you use Magic Leap products and services

  • Using approximate location to analyze and understand device use trends

  • Setting the location of your spatial maps if you enable cloud processing for spatial maps, which helps your device determine when to map a new area and when to retrieve stored spatial maps
